On the surface, snakewood simply appears to be a more attractive wood with
unique figuring. On the inside though, snakewood is heavier and more firm
than pernambuco.
Our snakewood bows are more slender than the pernambuco
so they have a similar amount of flex, but the snakewood bows are heavier
nonetheless. This provides the sense that the bow does much of the work,
causing your instrument to release sound with little effort. It also seems
to desire to remain attached to the string due to its weight.
However, one should not overlook our pernambuco bows. Our cut allows the bow
to have a similar flex to the snakewood, but it feels as light as a feather
in the hand. This can greatly reduce fatigue for extended performances as
well as providing that light and airy sound that so much early music demands.
As our prices are not prohibitive, we recommend that the professional be
equipped with both bows for selection and use as the situation requires.
